Synopsis

Faith leaders from the Lavender Interfaith Collective will offer a lively and thoughtful overview of LGBTIQ+* perspectives on several springtime holy days across diverse traditions.

Our goal is threefold:
– to deepen insight into these observances,
– to identify areas of shared meaning across faith traditions, and
– to continue building a vibrant community of interfaith clergy and lay leaders each season.

The Lavender Interfaith Collective (LInC) is a diverse, spiritually rich network of LGBTIQ+* and allied faith leaders rooted in many religious traditions and practices. We learn with one another, lead alongside one another, and cultivate spaces where queer wisdom and interfaith collaboration can flourish. Throughout this webinar series, we explore the historical and evolving language of Queer as a noun and Queering as a verb, noticing how common practices emerge separately and across traditions.

During this brief tour of selected spring observances, we will explore one or two guiding questions:
– Does this observance carry an inherent LGBTIQ+ sensibility?
– How has the community’s practice transformed it into an LGBTIQ+‑affirming expression of faith?
Our aim is to familiarize you with these traditions and inspire further exploration.

A generational example:
Each generation adopts a new language to describe itself—Urning, Homosexual, Homophile, Gay, GLBT, LGBTQ, Queer. Every generation stands on the shoulders of those before it, yet experiences itself as distinct. That pattern will continue. A future generation may embrace a new term—perhaps pride—as both noun and adjective. Language evolves because communities evolve.
– Toby Johnson, “Gay Spirituality”

* We use the term LGBTIQ+ as a practical shorthand within our interfaith context—one that honors the wide range of sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expressions, and sex characteristics that shape human experience across cultures, languages, and generations. This includes the vital contributions of LGBTIQ+ leaders whose insights continue to expand our collective understanding.
